Surfing, canyoning & mountain biking trip to Portugal

Adventure vacation Portugal
Surfing, MTB, canyoning!

Portugal – you immediately think of the sun-drenched beaches of the Algarve or surfers in Nazaré near Lisbon. But the westernmost country in the EU still has a few more regions to discover. The autonomous regions of Madeira and Azores with their islands, but also on the mainland itself, can be found great corners.

We travel with you on our adventure in Portugal as a small road trip to the country “behind the mountains” (the region in the northeast of the country is meant). In the “Minho”, the fruit and vegetable garden of the Portuguese mainland, it is wonderfully green and grapes, such as those used for Vinho Verde, thrive splendidly. After your arrival in Porto, we first drive to Ponta da Barca in the north-west of the only national park in the country. There we start the first days in Portugal with beginners canyoning and biking with the e-mountain bike through the dense forests and hills of the Peneda-Gêres National Park.

The first two days end with a sightseeing drive via Brage to the south of the national park, where we stay in a small village near the next canyons. With canyoning for advanced in Arado the next day and a possible further tour, you will experience the fabulous rock landscape up close. But you can also take a day off and go hiking on your own, for example.

Off to the sea! The days in the mountains were sporty, we change the location again and drive to the coast to Viana do Castelo, an old coastal town with a great fishing tradition. Two days of surfing lessons to ride the waves follow, the rest of the day you can enjoy the sea and the city, before we finally move on to the lively, colorful capital of the north, Porto.

The second largest city in the country, famous for port wine, the soup “Caldo verde” and “Francesinha” welcomes us with its colorful houses, lively streets and a wonderful view over the river Douro and the port wine factories towards the Atlantic. The last two days after so much “outdoor life” you can still experience a little Portuguese city culture here, after all, Greeks and Romans were already settled here and “Heinrich the Navigator” is known as the famous son of the city.

procedure

Flight from your home country to Porto, transfer to Ponta da Barca
Accommodation glamping or double room incl. breakfast

Beginners canyoning in northern Portugal The cross-border Peneda-Geres National Park with its granite rocks and gorges offers the best conditions for great canyoning tours. The Carcerellha Canyon, for example, is ideal for warming up and getting in. An open gorge with everything that goes with it, sunny and perfect for practicing techniques and jumps.

Afterwards, a SUP paddle tour is possible at the nearby reservoir (can also be booked)

Equipped with modern and well-maintained KTM e-bikes and safety equipment, we set off on an eventful mountain bike tour. We decide the level of the e-mountain bike trip spontaneously and according to the group, from flat passages along the river to single-trail passages, everything is included and thanks to e-support for everyone who can ride a bike.

Then we change the location to the other side of the national park to be closer to the next canyoning tours. We spend the night in the simple accommodation Casa do Criado (B & B) and can include one or the other sightseeing on the trip.

Canyoning in the Arado Gorge in the Geres National Park is already for advanced skiers, two great, high abseiling points and a zip line make the canyoning day special. But even the approach to this canyon in Portugal is a feast for the eyes, over and through the rocky landscape we hike in an hour to a small pass from which we can then start directly into the clear water of the Arado.

After 3-4 hours of exciting canyoning in the north of Portugal, we reach the end of the gorge, where bathers watch us carefully. On the way back to the accommodation we stop at some viewpoints.

We stay overnight in the Casa do Criado (B&B) and look forward to local delicacies that we will eat on the sun terrace.

Day at leisure (hiking, swimming in the river, relaxing)
-> Additional canyoning tour for a fee (109 € / per person) possible

Then drive to Viana do Castelo – change of location
Accommodation in Viana do Castelo (double room or apartment – self-organized breakfast in the bakery,
typical of the country)

You just have to go surfing on Portugal’s coast. It doesn’t really get any better suited than this. Flat beach breaks make it relaxed for beginners and everyone can try their hand at surfing / riding waves.

Surflesson in the morning (or after swell waves) and the rest of the day at leisure (beach, sightseeing, city, hiking)
Accommodation in Viana do Castelo (double room or apartment – self-organized breakfast in the bakery, typical of the country)

Portugal is best known for the big wave surfers in Nazaré. The waves in the north at Viana da Castelo or Port are not that big. They are suitable for every level of ability – for beginners. That’s what’s about today to ride waves on the beach again. Surfing in Portugal has to be easy.
