Adventure trip
evergreen Azores

11 days, 2 islands. Adventure vacation
at the westernmost point of Europe!

11 days, 2 islands. Adventure holiday at the westernmost point of Europe, basalt canyons in a green landscape, waterfall abseiling into the Atlantic and whale watching. Our Azores tour offers a variety of activities in one of the most impressive settings in Europe. Our adventure begins with the arrival in the capital Ponta Delgada on São Miguel. From here we travel together in the morning to the colorful flower island of Flores. From day two to seven, five canyoning tours await us in an indescribably beautiful landscape. Due to the many hiking trails and gorges, Flores has a large number of canyons from enjoyable, easily accessible canyons for beginners to canyons for advanced climbers with high abseiling points and jumps – everything a canyonist’s heart desires is there.

procedure

On this day, all tour participants can travel to the main island of Sāo Miguel in the Azores archipelago by 10 p.m. The targeted airport is called Ponta Delgada (PDL). From there you can have a transfer take you to our accommodation in the coastal town of Ponta Delgada. We all spend the night together in the same accommodation. The next day we all travel to Flores together.

In the morning we travel by propeller plane to the westernmost island of Flores in the Azores archipelago. The first drive takes us from Santa Cruz to the western part of the island. We move into our accommodation in a small fishing village and have lunch.
In the afternoon we will go through a canyon to get used to and to get to know the specific rock and the special features of the canyoning island of Flores. A short car transfer and we step into the clear water, which is darkly colored by the vegetation. The locals also say tea to it ;-). Jumps, slides and abseils lead us to the end of the canyon in a small reservoir, which we swim through with great views. We enjoy the rest of the day according to the wishes of the group.

An exciting drive takes us over the mountains of the island to the north side. There we turn into the jungle of the island. Old paths lead us to the canyon in the midst of light forests. The canyon Ilheus intermedio + inferior cuts deeper and deeper into the basalt of the island. We abseil down into a natural amphitheater made of basalt columns, pass an old water mill and at the end we hear the sound of the sea … another corner and you can see it: the Atlantic with its clear water. In the distance we see the ancient village of Ponta Delgada (Flores), which was formerly used for whaling. We’re not jumping into the sea yet. The way back takes us through the wonderful fauna and flora back to the vehicle. On the way back we enjoy local delicacies and take a look at the peculiarities of the landscape.
We enjoy the evening in Fajā Grande in the restaurant or at the sunset bar at the natural harbor.

Day four starts like the other days with breakfast together in the accommodation or traditionally with a Portuguese latte and toast in the bar next door.
Strengthened, we make our way into the next canyon on the island. Like a green tunnel, this gorge leads us through basalt and tuff directly to the cliffs of the ocean. Once there, we climb back to the car via an old fisherman’s path.

Now we have two options, either we relax and experience the island or we go. Let’s go on a second canyoning tour (additional canyoning tour).

True to the motto “Steep is G….” We can walk another unique canyon behind our accommodation. The canyon faces west and we abseil over great, higher waterfalls and green cascades into the upcoming sunset at the westernmost point of the EU. We round off the successful evening with a dinner in the local fish restaurant and a regional gin and tonic.

Day five is at your free disposal, here you can take a break, go snorkeling, explore the island or do an additional canyoning tour.

Today is the day! We have booked our boat transfer, Carlos, the skipper, knows when to pick us up. We go on a canyoning tour into the sea. We first hike downhill through damp meadows to the start of the tour. Small waterfalls lead us closer to the coast, suddenly the jungle rises above us and we look out of the canyon to the west. A gigantic view over the final waterfalls lets us linger and enjoy before we abseil down the last high cascades. Our way leads us over several abseiling points to the last waterfall, which ends directly in the ocean. We prepare, wait for our boat … there it is. We can take off and abseil down the waves. Carlos, our highly experienced skipper and canyonist as well, grins and pulls everyone out of the warm sea. Everyone is in the boat, now comes his part. He shows us an impressive surf cave before we take the boat trip to the port of Ponta Delgada. We help him load the boat, wash our things and tell each other about the unique experiences.
Tonight we visit an excellent restaurant in an originally abandoned coastal village and end the evening with the local dishes. Because tomorrow it’s back to the sea.

Gorges that end directly in the sea with their waterfalls are rare, there are several on Flores. So today there is another varied and special canyoning tour on the program. Open forest canyon, narrow tuff areas, high weathered side walls and a mystical end part make this canyon truly an absolute pearl of canyoning. The whole thing is crowned with a spectacular, free-hanging abseil into the Atlantic Ocean. Our boat is waiting here again, taking us on an exciting speedboat ride along the island towards Santa Cruz, the capital of Flores. Experiencing the rugged coastline from a boat is wonderful and when we arrive at the harbor, we use the time to explore the underwater world, swim and relax. While our canyoning equipment is drying, we take a stroll through town and learn interesting facts about the history of the island.

After packing, we leave the small island of Flores by plane in the direction of Ponta Delgada and travel back to the main island Saō Miguel, where we immerse ourselves in city life, relax, go to the beach or visit hot springs on the volcanic island. According to our mood.

On the ninth day we go whale watching! The Azores are on popular whale hiking trails. A wide variety of whales can be seen here almost all year round. Up to 24 species of whales can be seen in the Azores. A professional whale watching team and biologists accompany us, answer our questions and give us information about the impressive mammals.

Day ten is at your leisure again. Here we can organize a visit to a hot spring, a city tour or an island tour to end the camp properly.

On day eleven, our last day, the journey home is due. – Wonderful, eventful days are then behind us!

We look forward to another adventure with you!
