Every year between spring and fall, the Allgäu region offers the perfect window for canyoning, and each phase of this season has its own unique character. In spring, the receding snowmelt creates powerful, wild conditions; midsummer combines warm air temperatures with the refreshing coolness of crystal-clear pools; and early fall offers stable water levels and less crowded schedules. The water temperatures in the mountain streams usually range from about 8 to 15 degrees, which makes for a manageable experience at any time of year thanks to neoprene gear. We’ll show you which months are best suited for which types of adventures and what families, beginners, and athletic groups should keep in mind when choosing a date.
Spring, Midsummer, Fall: The Characteristics of the Seasons
At the start of the season in the spring, the gorges often still carry a strong current because meltwater and rainwater are still flowing down from the mountains. This phase showcases nature at its wildest and appeals especially to athletic beginners seeking an intense water experience; at the same time, the gorges are significantly less crowded than during the peak vacation weeks. High summer in July and August is the classic canyoning season, as warm air makes diving into the cool pools a real pleasure, and families benefit from the mildest conditions of the season. Weekends during school breaks are particularly popular, so booking early is recommended. In September and October, water levels usually stabilize, the light in the gorges becomes softer, and those who can plan flexibly get to experience the region at its most relaxed. For families with children ages 6 and up, we’ve developed “Canyoning Family ” in the Allgäu —a program that’s particularly well-suited for the warm summer months.
Scheduling in Practice: Weekdays, Water, and Last-Minute Opportunities
In addition to the season, two other factors influence your experience: the day of the week and the current water level. Experience has shown that weekday trips are quieter than Saturdays during peak season, which aligns well with our philosophy of always paddling without time pressure. Water levels, in turn, change the character of every tour, as more water means stronger currents and more challenging sections; our guides assess conditions before each trip based on over 25 years of experience in the area and a safety concept certified to ISO 21101. Thanks to the Edelrid neoprene gear we provide, the water temperature remains manageable throughout the season, allowing for enjoyable tours even on cooler days in spring or fall. Wearing an additional thin technical shirt under the wetsuit noticeably increases comfort for guests who are sensitive to the cold on such days. Those who want to take advantage of stable weather conditions on the spur of the moment can find last-minute openings for canyoning tours on our website and ensure they get the right conditions.
