Four Core Areas: More Than Just Rope Technology
From a technical standpoint, the training is based on four pillars, which together make up a fully qualified guide. Rope techniques are the most obvious pillar, ranging from the proper setup and inspection of rappelling points to redundant belay systems and rescue techniques for emergencies. Meteorology is the second pillar, because in the canyon, the correct assessment of weather conditions, precipitation, and water levels determines whether any tour can proceed; this expertise is the basis for every cancellation as well as every decision to proceed. Communication, often underestimated, is the third pillar, because leading a mixed group of bold and nervous individuals safely, clearly, and motivatingly requires trained communication skills and attention to each individual; the guide-to-guest ratio of no more than eight guests per guide provides the framework for this. Geology rounds out the framework, because only an understanding of a canyon’s formation, rock types, and behavior makes the terrain truly comprehensible and allows for the identification of hazardous areas.
