There’s a clear lower age limit: our family tour in the Starzlachklamm Gorge welcomes children ages 6 and up accompanied by their parents, provided they can swim safely; there’s no fixed upper age limit, however, because individual fitness, sure-footedness, and swimming ability are more important than the year of birth. In our gorges, you’ll find six-year-olds just as often as guests over 60—often even three generations together. Let’s start with the youngest participants, for whom our family program was designed. The “Canyoning Family” tour in the Starzlachklamm is aimed at children ages 6 and up who are accompanied by their parents, and requires that participants have safe swimming skills. The tour is tailored to children’s needs, featuring splashing in crystal-clear pools, floating on their backs, small optional jumps, and smooth rock slides, while certified guides explain each section in a child-friendly way and adjust the pace to suit the youngest participants. Personality is at least as important as age, because a child who loves water and is curious will benefit more from the tour than one who is brought along reluctantly; if in doubt, we’ll give parents honest advice over the phone and work together to determine whether the timing is right. For more athletic formats, such as the Basic Level, specific requirements apply to teenagers depending on the canyon and conditions, which we assess on an individual basis. No Upper Limit: Canyoning in Your 50s and 60s
At the other end of the age spectrum, the answer is refreshingly straightforward, as our program has no upper age limit. Three factors are key, which we’re happy to go over together before each booking: the ability to swim safely, sure-footedness on wet rock, and a basic level of fitness that allows for the uphill hike to the canyon. If these criteria are met, there’s nothing stopping you from joining a tour at age 55, 65, or older—especially since our guides adjust the pace to the group, jumps are always optional, and time pressure has no place in our tour philosophy. In our experience, guests who traverse their first canyon after turning 50 are among the most grateful of all—often having been given a gift certificate by their children or grandchildren for this shared experience.
